Agnes Mayfield looked out the window at the fallen leaves. Her black cat, Merlin, rubbed against her legs, before jumping up onto the window sill. He daintily walked over to her and sat down. Agnes scratched under his chin. “Hey, Merlin.”
“Meow.” He leaned into her touch and purred.
“Who’s my spooky little darling?” Agnes cooed. She kissed his head. “You’re such a sweetie!” At his look, she giggled and added, “And mysterious too!”
“Meow!”
Agnes turned to go. Drawing her sweater close, she wondered if she should go into town and get some supplies. Halloween was also a day away and she loved scaring the neighborhood children with a look and a soft cackle or two. It was not her fault they thought she was a witch. Can’t a girl live alone in a run down, gothic mansion with a black cat? Her family had lived there for ages and the church that stood across from her home once belonged to her family. One had only to go for a walk through its cemetery to find the names of her long dead relatives. But no, it was far easier to simply label her a witch and be done with it. She had, after all, decided to run with it.
She sighed. “I think I’m going to go into town, Merlin. I’ll get us some fish and maybe a few apples, so I can make a pie for dessert.”
Merlin glanced at her, before quickly returning his attention to view outside the window. A murder of crows was playing in the leaves and Merlin chittered excitedly at them. If only he could get his paws on them! He could not understand why his mistress liked them so much. He let out a low, feral meow and patted the window.
Agnes threw on her cloak and walked outside, shutting the door behind her. The crows called out and the one she called Odin, flew over to her. “Hey, Odin,” she said as he landed on her shoulder.. “I’m going into town, be a love and help Merlin look after the place, okay?” Agnes scratched his head.
Odin cawed at her and flew over to his family.
Agnes was sure; he was telling them to be on patrol, so she made a mental note to buy an extra pound of walnuts for them. She hurried to the gate, and walked through it, closing it behind her. She briskly made her way down the road towards the town. Halloween may be tomorrow, but the November rains would be here soon enough. Agnes hated the rain as much as Merlin did and she wondered if Tom, the butcher’s son would be so kind as to hitch up his father’s wagon and deliver her supplies. An apple and a smile would do the trick, she thought, and if people want to think I’ve bewitched him, then so be it… She let her thoughts drift towards him as her lips twitched upwards in a smile, for they were pleasant ones. Maybe I’m the one who’s bewitched… Now wouldn’t that be funny? A witch bewitched!
